How to Buy Bitcoin in Iraq
Buying Bitcoin in Iraq no longer means finding a dealer, agreeing a price over a messaging app and hoping the transfer arrives. With IQX — Iraq's first crypto exchange — you fund a wallet in Iraqi Dinar, buy BTC at the live market price, and keep a record of every transaction in your account.
This guide walks through the whole process: what you need, how to pay in IQD, what it costs, and how to avoid the mistakes that cost first-time buyers money.
Can you buy Bitcoin in Iraq?
Yes. You can buy Bitcoin from anywhere in Iraq — Baghdad, the Kurdistan Region, the south — using an Iraqi phone number, an Iraqi ID, and Iraqi Dinar. You do not need a foreign bank account, a foreign card, or a VPN.
What you do need is an account that is verified to Iraqi standards, because verification is what unlocks IQD deposits and trading.
What you need before you start
- An email address or an Iraqi phone number — either one is enough to register.
- Your ID details for Basic verification (name, ID number, date of birth).
- Iraqi Dinar to spend, from a bank card, QiCard, ZainCash, FIB, Switch, or physical cash.
- About ten minutes. Registration and Basic verification are usually the longest part, and they only happen once.
You don't need to buy a whole Bitcoin. BTC divides into 100,000,000 units, so you can start with a small IQD amount and add to it later.
Step 1 — Create your IQX account
- Go to iqx.io or open the IQX app.
- Tap Login / Sign Up.
- Enter your email address or phone number.
- Enter the OTP we send you — by email, or by WhatsApp or SMS if you registered with a phone number.
Your account exists at this point, but it cannot hold Iraqi Dinar yet. That comes next.
For the full walkthrough, see How to Sign Up & Verify Identity.
Step 2 — Complete identity verification
IQX has two verification levels, and which one you need depends on what you plan to do with your Bitcoin.
| Basic verification | VIP verification | |
|---|---|---|
| What it asks for | Name, ID number, date of birth | ID card upload + a short verification video |
| Deposit IQD | Yes | Yes |
| Buy and sell BTC | Yes | Yes |
| Withdraw IQD | Yes | Yes |
| Withdraw Bitcoin to your own wallet | No | Yes |
| Limits | Standard | Higher |
If you only want to buy and hold BTC inside your IQX account, Basic verification is enough.
If you want to move your Bitcoin to a private wallet — a hardware wallet, or any address you control — complete VIP verification. You can upgrade at any time from Profile → Identification → Upgrade to VIP Verification.
Step 3 — Add Iraqi Dinar to your wallet
There are two ways to get IQD into your IQX balance, and Iraqis use both.
Option A — Pay online through the payment gateway
Deposit IQD from any Iraqi bank or payment provider through Wayl:
- Open Wallet → Deposit and enter your deposit amount.
- Continue to the payment gateway.
- Choose your method — Cards, QiCard, ZainCash, FIB, or Switch.
- Confirm the payment. The funds appear in your IQX balance once the payment is confirmed.
This is the fastest route and works from anywhere with an internet connection.
Option B — Hand over physical cash at an exchange house
If you'd rather pay in cash, IQX works with authorized exchange houses across Iraq:
- Open Wallet → Deposit Cash and pick an exchange house from the map — the app can find the one closest to you.
- Enter the IQD amount you plan to deposit.
- You receive a Tracking Code (for example
CI123456). Save it. - Take the cash to that exchange house and show the cashier your Tracking Code.
- As soon as the merchant confirms the cash, your IQD balance is credited instantly.
A few things worth knowing about cash deposits:
- Nothing is reserved when you create the ticket — you are only credited once the merchant confirms.
- Tickets expire after 24 hours if the cash isn't delivered.
- You can cancel a pending ticket any time before the merchant confirms it.
- Hand over exactly the amount written on your ticket.
Step 4 — Buy Bitcoin
With IQD in your wallet, the purchase itself takes about two clicks:
- Open Trade → Instant Trading from the side menu.
- Set your payment coin to IQD.
- Select BTC as the coin you want to buy.
- Enter your amount and confirm.
Every trade executes at the real-time market price, so you're paying the same rate the global market is paying at that moment — not a rate someone quoted you.
You can check the rate before you commit on the Bitcoin price page or run the numbers in the BTC to IQD converter.
Step 5 — Hold it, move it, or sell it
Hold it on IQX. Your BTC sits in your account balance. IQX holds customer assets in a layered custody model — hot wallets for routine settlement, warm wallets with stricter controls for operational liquidity, and cold (offline) wallets for the majority of assets.
Move it to your own wallet. Complete VIP verification, then withdraw to any Bitcoin address you control. This is the right choice for long-term holdings you don't intend to trade. See Deposit & Withdraw Crypto.
Sell it back to Iraqi Dinar. Open Trade → Instant Trading, choose Sell, select BTC, and receive IQD. You can then withdraw that IQD to your bank account, or collect it as physical cash from an exchange house using a ticket code and a one-time PIN.
What does it cost?
Every spot trade on IQX is charged a single commission — there are no hidden spreads stacked on top. The rate depends on whether your order adds liquidity to the order book (maker) or takes it away (taker), and on your fee tier.
Current rates for every pair and tier are published on the trading fees page.
Beyond the trading fee, budget for:
- Network fees when you withdraw BTC to an external wallet — these are set by the Bitcoin network, not by IQX.
- Payment provider charges that your bank, card issuer or wallet app may apply to the IQD deposit itself.
Buying Bitcoin in your city
The process is the same across Iraq, but payment habits and cash options differ by city:
Beyond Bitcoin
BTC is where most people start, but IQX supports the major cryptocurrencies — ETH, USDT, USDC, BNB, SOL, XRP, UNI, DOGE, TRX, LINK, SHIB, AAVE, POL and more — across the ERC20, BEP20, Solana, XRP and TRC20 networks.
Many Iraqi users hold USDT alongside Bitcoin, because it tracks the US dollar and doesn't swing the way BTC does. Browse everything on the buy and sell page.
Five mistakes to avoid
- Buying from a stranger on Telegram or WhatsApp. There is no escrow, no recorded price, and no way to recover the money. Every "agent" claiming to sell you BTC at a special rate is a risk you don't need to take.
- Sharing your OTP. IQX will never ask for it. Anyone who does is trying to take your account.
- Skipping 2FA. A password alone is not enough. Turn on two-factor authentication the day you open the account.
- Typing the domain wrong. Only ever use
iqx.io. Phishing sites copy the design exactly. - Sending BTC to the wrong network. Bitcoin goes to a Bitcoin address. Sending it over the wrong network can lose it permanently — always check the address and network before confirming.
Frequently asked questions
How much Bitcoin do I have to buy?
You don't need to buy a whole BTC. Bitcoin divides down to eight decimal places, so you can buy a fraction of one with a modest IQD amount. The exact minimum for a trade is shown on the trade screen before you confirm.
Can I buy Bitcoin in Iraq with cash?
Yes. Create a cash deposit ticket in the app, take the cash to the authorized exchange house you selected, and your IQD balance is credited as soon as the merchant confirms it. Then buy BTC with that balance. Tickets expire after 24 hours.
Do I need a bank account to buy Bitcoin in Iraq?
No. You can fund your wallet with QiCard, ZainCash, FIB, Switch, or physical cash at an exchange house. A bank account is useful mainly if you later want to withdraw Iraqi Dinar directly to a bank — and even then, cash pickup is an alternative.
How long does it take to buy Bitcoin?
The trade itself is instant. The time is in the funding step: an online IQD deposit clears once the payment confirms, and a cash deposit is credited as soon as the exchange house confirms receipt. Basic verification is a one-time step.
Can I sell my Bitcoin back to Iraqi Dinar?
Yes. Sell BTC for IQD in Instant Trading, then either withdraw the IQD to your bank account or collect it as physical cash from an exchange house. IQD bank withdrawals are processed within a few days, with a total limit of 5,000,000 IQD per user within 24 hours.
Why can't I withdraw my Bitcoin?
Crypto withdrawals require VIP verification. Basic verification covers IQD deposits, withdrawals and buying and selling, but not moving crypto off the platform. Upgrade from Profile → Identification.
Is Bitcoin regulated in Iraq?
Rules around cryptocurrency in Iraq continue to evolve, and IQX cannot give you legal or tax advice. Check the current guidance from the Central Bank of Iraq and, if your situation is significant, speak to a qualified adviser before you buy.
